The Arkhangelsk Regional Youth Research Competition named after M.V. Lomonosov. General information

Since 2003, the Kenozero National Park has been holding the Arkhangelsk Regional Youth Research Competition named after M.V. Lomonosov, which is one of the main directions of the environmental education and educational activities of the Park.

 The main goal of the contest, co-founded by the Government of the Arkhangelsk Region, the Interregional Lomonosov Foundation, and the universities of the regional center, is the formation of a unified educational space for the region, intellectual and creative development of the individual, ecological education of schoolchildren in the region through research of nature, rich cultural and historical heritage of the region, and studying the livelihood of outstanding compatriots. In the composition of the contest the natural and humanitarian directions are highlighted. 

The competition is held in 2 rounds in two age groups: 6 - 8 classes, 9 - 11 classes. The First round is an open-ended correspondence competition, for which students send their research. Each work is reviewed by the Expert Council, which includes well-known scientists in Arkhangelsk. The authors of the works that receive positive reviews are invited to progress to the Second round of the competition - the Lomonosov Readings, which traditionally take place on at the children's ecological camp of the Kenozero National Park. During the Second round young researchers present poster presentations and defend their work in front of the Competition Commission. The work of schoolchildren on the terms of the contest involves: awareness of the current state of the field of research, possession of the experimental methodology, the availability of their own data, their analysis, generalizations, and conclusions. 


Following the results of the Contest, a digest is published which includes all the materials of the contest works of participants — of prize-winners and winners in the Contest nominations are presented, as well as the works recommended for publication by the Competition Committee. 

The competition is held in the tradition of the Russian scientific school, which is ensured by the wide involvement of the scientific community, the use of human and material potential of institutions of science and higher education. The competition develops an understanding of scientific ethics and scientific traditions, assists teachers in the selection and formulation of research tasks, stimulates the participation of children and adults in environmental activities, and fosters the formation of an active civic position.
